Tao Liu

Research Student

Tao joined the unit as a D.Phi.l student in October 2024, under the co-supervision of Dr. Ashwini Oswal and Professor Huiling Tan. His research interests lie at the intersection of brain-computer interfaces, machine learning, and neural dynamics. Tao holds a BEng in Biomedical Engineering from Beihang University, China, where he focused on developing machine learning and deep learning algorithms based on brain functional networks and EEG data. He later obtained an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London, where his research centered on uncovering low-dimensional latent dynamics in neural populations during motor and cognitive tasks in primates. Before commencing his D.Phil., Tao worked as a research assistant at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he contributed to research on low-dimensional neural dynamics in localised brain regions, using EEG data from stroke patients.

Tao’s D.Phil. is funded by the University of Oxford and the China Scholarship Council. He is also a recipient of the prestigious China Oxford Scholarship for 2024-2025. His current research focuses on uncovering the low-dimensional neural dynamics in specific brain regions of patients with Parkinson’s, with the aim of exploring potential applications in rehabilitation.
